Explore the full transformation in our latest case study."

Project Overview

Our client came to us with a vision: a Craftsman/Art Deco-inspired kitchen and living space that felt both moody and bold, yet brighter and more open. Her love of "bluesy" hues and jazzy art would serve as inspiration for the entire design, with a key focus on creating a layered lighting effect and maximizing storage without losing style.

Challenges

  • Creating Light in a Dark Space – The kitchen and living area had limited natural light, and the client wanted to maintain a bold, moody atmosphere while still brightening up the overall space.

  • Limited Storage & Layout Restrictions – The client desired more storage and modern functionality, but space limitations meant we couldn’t push cabinets back or move gas lines without compromising closet space or facing additional costs.

  • Balancing Bold Colors and Cohesion – The client wanted to incorporate her love of dark blues without making the space feel overwhelming or cluttered.

  • Structural Constraints in the Pantry – A load-bearing lowered ceiling in the pantry created a design hurdle, as the cabinetry needed to extend seamlessly to the ceiling throughout the kitchen.

Solutions

  • Layered Lighting – We tackled the lighting challenge by incorporating a variety of light sources: recessed lighting with dimmers, undercabinet lighting, backlit glass cabinets to highlight the client's special china, and accent table lamps in the living area. This allowed the client full control over the ambiance and ensured the space never felt too dark or too stark.

  • Maximizing Storage with Creative Solutions – Instead of pushing back cabinets, we opted for a smaller island with built-in toe kick drawers for added storage. Open shelves were installed on the base cabinets facing the living room, providing an elegant space to showcase decorative items and favorite wines. We also custom built a storage bench to store crafts and additional supplies in the dining area to create a cozy nook.

  • Tone-on-Tone Cabinetry for Depth and Boldness – To maintain the boldness of the design without overwhelming the room, we used a two-tone approach on the cabinets. A darker navy blue framed the cabinetry, while a brighter blue covered the flush faces and island, creating a dynamic yet cohesive look.

  • Faux Cabinetry and Custom Storage – In the kitchen, we overcame the load-bearing ceiling challenge by framing the soffit area with faux cabinets, maintaining the ceiling-high cabinetry look. We extended the storage by closing out an opening to the kitchen as well as a hall closet and converting it to a pantry, all painted in a warm white. We also built a custom tall spice rack to optimize storage space and functionality. A cozy dining room nook featuring a custom built-in bench in a rich blue with patterned cushions and colorful throw pillows. We finished the walls in a warm white to continue the brightness from the kitchen to the newly renovating dining and living area.

  • Custom Outdoor Kitchen and Patio Overhaul – The project extended outdoors with the creation of a custom-built kitchen featuring a flat-top grill, sink, fridge, and seating for summer entertainment. We added a covered patio with a ceiling fan and outdoor TV to create a true outdoor retreat.

Results

The Bluesy Hues Residence now boasts a stunning, personalized kitchen and living space that reflects the client’s personality, taste, and love for blue hues. The space is layered with light, bold in color, and highly functional with storage solutions that cater to a busy professional’s lifestyle. The kitchen feels expansive and open without sacrificing any of the bold design elements the client desired. Plus, the custom-built outdoor kitchen and patio ensure the space flows seamlessly from indoor to outdoor living, perfect for hosting gatherings or enjoying a relaxing evening at home.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do you balance bold color with light and openness? We achieve balance by carefully layering lighting sources and selecting complementary tones. In this project, the two-tone cabinetry and strategic use of blues created visual depth without overwhelming the space, while recessed and undercabinet lighting brought a bright, airy feel to balance the darker hues.

Q: How can I add storage to my kitchen without compromising space? We love thinking outside the box when it comes to storage. In the Bluesy Hues project, we built toe-kick drawers under the cabinets and created open shelving on the island’s side to display decorative items while maximizing storage. Custom solutions like these let you add functionality without crowding your space.

Q: What are some creative lighting solutions for a dark kitchen? Layered lighting is key! In this project, we installed recessed lighting on dimmers, undercabinet lighting, and backlit cabinets to create a warm, adjustable light that adapts to any mood or task. We also added copper pendants and accent lamps to tie the lighting design together.

Q: What’s the benefit of a custom-built outdoor kitchen? A custom outdoor kitchen like the one we created for this project allows you to tailor the space to your lifestyle. Whether you’re a grill enthusiast or love hosting summer parties, designing your kitchen to include specific appliances and seating areas enhances both functionality and enjoyment of your outdoor space. It can also add property value.
